The Basic Allowance for Subsistence (BAS) was designed to offset the cost of meals for service members who eat off base, but not their family members. As of January, 2002, all enlisted members get full BAS, but pay for their meals, including those eaten on-base.

Your BAS varies with the price of food, so is adjusted each year. These updated allowances reflect changes measured by the USDA food cost index.

2007 BAS Rates
Officers BAS:
(including commissioned officers, warrant officers and aviation cadets)
$192.74 per month.
Enlisted Members BAS:
(almost everyone who has completed basic training)
$279.88 per month.
