Members are entitled to 90 days of temporary storage when their household goods are being moved at government expense on a set of Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders. Members may request an extension in writing by completing a DD-1857.
Storage may be used at origin, enroute or at the member's destination.
Members should try to avoid using termporary storage by planning for a realistic date when their goods can be accepted. This will save the property from additional handling and possible damage.
Non-Temporary or Long-term Storage
Long-term storage is usually authorized in specific cases (as noted in entitlements section).
Great care should be taken in separating items to be shipped and stored because once in storage, it is not easy to retrieve them.
The total weight of property shipped and stored should not exceed the authorized weight allowance.
A member desiring the pickup of household goods from public storage or mini-warehouse must make an appointment for pickup with the carrier. The member should then provide the carrier with a description of what is being picked up.
At the scheduled time for pickup, the member or member's representative must be at the storage area or warehouse. The member or member's representative is responsible for unstacking all boxes and then unpacking the contents. The carrier will then repack and move the boxes. These instructions must be followed if household goods are to be picked up as scheduled.
