Family Centers

Family Centers, located on most military installations, provide information, life-skills education, and support services to military members and their families. One of the primary functions of the Family Center is to link customers with appropriate services available in the local community or through state and federal assistance programs.

The term Family Center is a generic term; each service refers to their own centers by a different name:

  • Army Community Service Centers (ACS)
  • Navy Family Service Centers (FSC)
  • Air Force Family Support Centers (FSC)
  • Marine Corps Family Service Centers (FSC)

Each Family Center develops working partnerships with organizations such as local health and human services, churches, school systems, employment assistance, law enforcement, recreation, and other service providers. As a result, they are able to provide many emergency and long-term assistance to military members and families, including:

  • Crisis Assistance: Quick response for help in critical situations. In some cases, bases have 24-hour assistance available.
  • Deployment and Mobilization Support: Centers specialize in giving all members and their families support before, during and after deployments. They also work to help reservists during times of mobilization.
  • Employment Assistance: Because of the mobility of a military family, centers work hard to find military spouses and family members jobs on base and in local communities.
  • Financial Management Counseling and Education: Counselors are usually available to help military families plan budgets and work through debt problems and plan for retirement.
  • New Parent Education Programs: New parents are provided classes (sometimes in-home) and offered help with questions about newborn and infant care.
  • Relocation Assistance: With moves every few years, every military family needs help during times of relocation.
  • Support Groups: From 12-step programs to family support groups during deployment, a whole range of support groups are available to military members.

These are only a sample of what is available at military family centers. Check out our directory and find the center closest to you.
